About the Sunrise Sunset Calculator

This tool computes sunrise, sunset, and solar noon for any date and location using a standard solar position algorithm. It accounts for the date (which determines the sun's declination), the latitude (which together with declination sets the day length), and the longitude (which sets the offset from the time zone meridian). Atmospheric refraction and the sun's apparent radius are approximated by using a zenith angle of 90.833°.

What is solar noon?

Solar noon (also called transit) is the moment when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky for the day — when it crosses the local meridian. It is generally close to clock noon but differs depending on your longitude within your time zone and the equation of time.

Why do the results differ slightly from another source?

Different tools use slightly different zenith angles and refraction models. This tool uses the common 90.833° zenith for official sunrise/sunset, which includes about 34 arcminutes of refraction plus the sun's 16 arcminute radius. Differences of a minute or two are normal.

How to use this calculator

Frequently asked questions

What do I enter for New York? Latitude about 40.71, longitude about −74.01. The defaults already use New York.

Does this tool upload my location? No. Everything is computed locally in your browser. No geolocation or network requests are made.

Why does it say the sun never sets? Inside the polar circles, during summer the sun stays above the horizon all day (midnight sun), and during winter it never rises (polar night). The tool detects these cases and reports them.
